“We really ARE all connected, you know. What affects one person affects us all.” So said my sister Jean, as we discussed how our nephew’s divorce years back affected the whole clan. I don’t think we’d ever talked about its effect on US – though we surely noted its effect on our beloved nephew. That got me to thinking that my relational upsets had been noticed by my family.
Then, this morning, I was reading Paul Hawken’s “The Ecology of Commerce” and noting the effects that our seemingly smallest actions can have on the environment, and, ultimately on all of life.
It’s true, I think – “no man IS an island” (John Donne). Our actions – and our emotions – do affect one another.
That’s a good thing for me to remember as I go about my life. We’re so interconnected – why not make it be in a GOOD way whenever I can.
On the heels of a family birthday party that was one of the nicest weekends of my life, I realize that it really DOES work both ways. This past weekend it seemed like our happiness truly was exponential.
Do you feel like your actions – and emotions – affect those around you? What about a larger community – do your actions, choices, way of life affect the world? I really want to know!
