Sundays are Spirituality Day here at Taking it to the Streets
The Unity Prayer of Protection
The light of God surrounds me;
The love of God enfolds me;
The power of God protects me;
The presence of God watches over me;
Wherever I am, God is and all is well.
This is one of my favorite prayers. We say it at the end of our service at my church (Unity Church of Crystal Lake) and for a long time I had a copy of this prayer up next to my bathroom mirror to help me start my day from a place of centeredness.
I have several ‘formal’ prayers (i.e., a proscribed format, not just me chatting it up with God) to which I return repeatedly and this is one of them. I love both the depth and the simplicity of this prayer. It pretty much sums up God’s role in my life, thought it does seem to refer to a transcendent God rather than one who is both transcendent and immanent (which is what I believe).
Probably the most useful part of the prayer to me is the last line – “Where I am, God is, and all is well.”
So easy to forget that when fear creeps or pain or sorrow creeps in to my life.
After we say this prayer at the close of the service on Sundays, we add “Yay, God!” which I love.
I’ll highlight some of my other favorite prayers on other Sundays. Now how about you? What are YOUR favorite prayers? I mean the formal kind not the ones I say more often like “Thanks! that was cool!” or “Say WHAT? You’re kidding, right?” or “Help!” or, “Please bless and be with so-and-so.”
Over to you. do you use formal prayers in your spiritual life? If so, which are YOUR favorites? I really want to know!
